SAUL STEINBERG

Saul Steinberg is a well-known cartoonist and illustrator.  The majority of his work does not relate to my theme, however I believe that his work with masks links well to my theme as it shows disguise. Steinberg stated that his mask work had a deep meaning within it; of which was that he believes everyone in the world is hidden beneath their own mask, of which Steinberg believes may be their clothing or hair, for example. Since Steinberg’s work implies that everyone is disguised in some way, I believe the mask work that he has produced links well to my theme of disguise and so enables me to take inspiration from Steinberg to use within my own work by creating my own masks and placing them upon my family before photographing them.

IMAGE ANALYSIS

This piece of Steinberg’s work is most definitely my favorite. I believe not only does it show that all people are hidden behind their own masks, whether it be clothing/make up or absolutely anything, it also shows that absolutely everybody is able to do so. This photograph shows a family of people wearing masks and so I believe that Steinberg is using this piece to show that no matter how much you know someone, whether they be family or not, they may still have a lot to hide and so this could be Steinberg’s personal opinion, as I believe Steinberg’s work is very personal to him. Steinberg’s use of colour is simply monochrome, I  believe that this is also to show that the photographs hold a deep/dark meaning, also linking to the atmosphere of the image, of which I believe is quite miserable and sad.
