NINA CHAKRABARTI

Nina Chakrabarti is not necessarily a photographer, however I have decided to research her because she creates illustrations upon professional photographs and so I could interpret inspiration from her within my own photography work. Chakrabarti works upon a mixture of both asymmetrical and symmetrical photographs. Chakrabarti uses just simply biro pens, ink and software on the Apple mac to create her work. I believe her work links well to my theme of disguise as the illustrations she creates upon the photographs disguise the object they are drawn upon. I also believe that Chakrabarti’s work looks very similar to tattoo art, of which I strongly believe are a type of disguise on the human body, as they are occasionally used to disguise what some people may believe are imperfections upon their body, like stretch marks and scars for example.

IMAGE ANALYSIS

This piece of Chakrabarti’s work is from a collection of pieces named ‘Voodoo Queens’ of which possibly got the name due to the tribal illustrations drawn all over the photographs. The illustrations are drawn upon a portrait photograph, making the photograph look more symmetrical. Chakrabarti uses a bold black colour against the original coloured photograph, of which I think clashes, however it is this clash that makes her work look much more original and effective.
