LUCAS SIMÕES
Lucas Simões is an independent artist from Brazil. He creates his work by cutting and removing (mainly through the use of burning) segments of photographs to make them look heavily distorted. His work is also usually built up in layers of different segments. Simões’ work is always abstract; this is because he believes that we are all free and that abstract work suggests a feeling of being free. This is also the reason why Simões does not have a particular/specific style within his work as he does not enjoy being labeled a specific type of artist and does not like his work to be labeled a specific type of work, as he is free and wants to express this through his quirky work.

IMAGE ANALYSIS

This piece of Simões’ work is a photograph of a woman, who appears to be sad, that has been burnt into. The burnt area of the photograph, in my opinion, takes the shape of a teardrop. As Simões said, his work is used to represent freedom, and the fact that this woman appears to be sad could be used to show that she does not feel free, or wants to be free and so this sets a very upsetting mood. Also, this photograph ensures that the viewer has a strong engagement with the subject matter as an extreme close-up is used, this may have been used to ensure that the viewer engages with the subject strongly and is therefore made to feel for the subject and understand the atmosphere of the image.
