ANALYSIS
The photographer Laura Williams, of who I previously researched, inspired this photo shoot. Laura used her photographs to express the feeling she believes we all get sometimes, of which is the feeling of not being heard. To show this, Laura uses a mirror to make parts of the human body look invisible as she believes this represents feeling unheard/invisible. I took inspiration from Laura’s work and decided to attempt to create a photo shoot quite like Laura’s. I aimed to make the head of the subject look invisible by using a mirror, like Laura. However, many of Laura’s photo shoots are taken indoors, whereas I decided to take all of my photographs outdoors.

This first photograph of the slides shown above is a portrait photograph, of which I shot using a Nikon camera. I used the manual setting on my camera to allow me to get the photograph exactly how I wanted it as the manual setting allows you to have more control of the photograph. The concept of this image was to present the feeling of “feeling invisible” as I took inspiration from Laura Williams (the photographer I have studied). I took the photographs using nothing but natural light, I decided not to use the flash on my photographs, as I did not want the flash to reflect in the mirror and because I thought the natural lighting looked much more effective. However, unlike the artist I researched (of who took the majority of her photographs indoors), I used my garden to take the photographs in because I thought that having nature in the background of my image made the photograph look much more effective. I used Photoshop to edit the photograph once taken and I made the photograph look much darker, in order to create more of a negative mood, just like the subject behind the photograph. On this photograph I have a significantly shallow depth of field to ensure I was able to capture and focus on more detail. The mirror used within each photograph “disguises” the object and so I believe it links well to my chosen theme.
This second photograph is also a portrait photograph, of which I shot using a Nikon camera. Once again, I used the manual setting on my camera to allow me to get the photograph exactly how I wanted it as the manual setting allows you to have more control of the photograph. This photograph has a deeper depth of field, as I believe that having a deeper depth of field allows more of the surroundings to be captured too. Due to the fact that a larger proportion of the surroundings can be seen in this photograph, I think it looks more effective as I believe it helps camouflage the subject and makes the subject look more invisible, of which is the look I was aiming for. This photograph has more of a smaller point of focus, as not much detail is to be seen, this is because once again I wanted my subject to look more invisible.
The third photograph is again, a portrait photograph, of which I also shot with a Nikon camera. However, for this shot I tried to experiment by trying a different setting on the camera, of which was the ‘Auto’ setting. I also altered the contrast of the image by making it slightly darker, as I believe this displayed the negative mood a little more, of which was the look I wanted to create, as it shows the theme of the image well. This photograph has neither a shallow nor deep depth of field, as I think this shows detail, but not too much, giving the image just the right focus.
I believe that the fourth photograph is very much like the first photograph I have presented. As it is also a portrait photograph, of which has both a shallow depth of field and a very large focus point. However, I did not include any of the greenery like I did in the previous photographs, yet I still took the image outdoors. I used the sky as the background for this image as I took the image from the floor, looking up at the sky and ensured the mirror was also on an angle facing the sky too, so that the sky would be reflected in it. After taking this image, I used Photoshop to darken the area of the body shown so that the attention would be took away from it and so that it gave more of an invisible look to my image, as this was my aim.
